Yooka-Laylee

On the 1st of May the most funded UK game ever was launched on kickstarter, reaching its initial goal of £175,000 in under 40 minutes, demolishing previous kickstarter records. This record breaking game ‘Yooka-Laylee’ comes from new UK Publishers Playtonic Games, who are attempting to recreate the golden age of platformers and previous title ‘Banjo-Kazooie’. From the power of nostalgia Yooka-Laylee has raised over £1.58 million with 33 days still to go, that’s over 900% of the original goal.

Yooka-Laylee seems to be resurecting both a dead game genre and the Rareware Legacy, providing consumers with the nostalgic hit they’ve been craving since the disappointing release of Banjo-Kazooie Nuts’n’Bolts. Audiences have clearly spoken, the niche market of nostalgia is highly profitable with other titles bring back old console series like Castlevania which has been revived through kickstarter with Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. These games appeal to audiences who get sucked in by the hype, ignoring the revenue, taking comfort in an industry that has given them so many good titles.

Clearly nostalgia sells and while many people complain about a lack of new ideas audiences have voted with their own money that nostalgia is the best genre around today.
